What is Fandom Trumps Hate?
FTH is an online fanworks auction, designed to raise money for nonprofit organizations that help and protect those who are being targeted by the current administration. You can read more about us here.
In our first two years, the auction has raised over $50,000. We're hoping to do more good work this year!
When can I sign up to offer fanworks? When can I start bidding?
The full calendar for the auction is available here, and is also pinned to the top of our community page so you can find it easily.
What types of fanwork can I offer?
The auction is open to five categories of fanwork:
- fic
- digital art, which includes but is not limited to gifsets, manips, moodboards, &c.
- podfics
- fanvids
- fan labor, which includes but is not limited to betaing, brit/japan/america-picking, etc.
Each of these categories is intentionally broad, so that the auction can encompass as many kinds of fanworks as possible. When participants sign up, they will be asked to describe their offering not only in terms of one of these five categories, but also in terms of the relevant subcategory (e.g. someone who signs up to offer fan labor will be asked to indicate whether they are offering beta work, -picking, or translation, and to add any other necessary information in a comments box.)
Can I offer more than one thing?
Yes. You can offer up to three (3) auctions. We’ll ask you to fill out the signup form separately for each fanwork you offer. Please be mindful, though, of how many assignments you can actually fulfill. If you overpromise and cannot come through for your bidders, that is not helping the auction over the long term. It’s okay to offer only one fanwork.
How many fandoms can I offer to create for?
You can select up to 3 fandoms per fanwork you decide to offer. We know there are some of you out there who are deeply committed to a large number of fandoms, and we are sorry that this stricture cramps your style, but we have found that the auction is much more manageable for both mods and bidders when this limitation is in place.
I’ve already started a work similar to my bidder’s prompt, or I’m planning on writing a work similar to it for a big bang or other challenge. Can I just use that to fulfill my auction?
Unless your bidder expressly says that this is fine with them, no, your fanwork needs to be an entirely new creation created only for this auction. This is so that your #1 priority is creating something to your bidder’s tastes, in a timely manner. If you’ve already laid out plot points that aren’t what your bidder was looking for, need to wait to post the finished product until another deadline, etc etc, your bidder becomes a lower priority.
What about fan crafts? Why can’t I auction off fan crafts as part of the auction?
Because of the added complication of shipping costs and the possibility of objects getting lost in transit, we are not able to take on the added responsibility of overseeing their exchange. This auction project is big enough that we can’t responsibly agree to take that on.
If, however, you want to auction off fan crafts and donate the proceeds, we support and applaud you! And we will help spread the word for you. Please drop a note to the mods at the FTHMods account, and tell us a) that the proceeds will be donated b) the name of the group(s) to which you will be donating and c) your contact information in case of questions. (And don’t forget to tag us!)
So I sorta flaked on my bidder last year. Can I still offer something at the auction this year?
Sorry, but no. While we cannot absolutely guarantee that every bidder will receive the item they bid for in a timely fashion, it’s our goal to get as close to 100% success as possible. If you failed to come through for your bidder last year, we don’t want to ask this year’s bidders to risk similar disappointment.
You are still very welcome to participate in the auction as a bidder.
What about if my fanworks from last year are still in progress?
If you are partway through posting something from FTH 2018, you are welcome to participate this year, but you can offer only one fanwork.
What causes/nonprofits are you supporting this year?
You can find this year's list, and our updated nonprofit policy, in this post.
Do I need to join this community in order to take part in the auction?
Nope! All of our posts will be public, and anything that requires direct individual input will be be hosted elsewhere and just linked here. You are welcome to join to show your support if you have a DW account, but it isn't necessary.
Is it legal to sell fanworks like this?
The legality of selling fanworks is a big grey area that depends highly on the individual work and the details of the sales transaction. Luckily, that doesn’t apply to us, because we aren’t selling fanworks. We are asking people to donate directly to charities, and fan creators are promising to create a work as a gift for that person to thank them for this donation. No creators are getting any money for this (and neither are we!).
I didn't get an email confirmation after I submitted my signup. Should I worry?
Not if you signed up in the first couple of days, and if you saw a confirmation page after finishing your signup. We've since added in an email form confirmation, so anyone signing up on or after January 9th can in fact expect an email confirmation. If you don't get one, feel free to contact the mods.
What if it turns out that I want to fix things in my signup?
If you realize after you click send that you need to make changes, you can send us a message here on DW, or drop us an email at fandomtrumpshate at gmail. Additionally, there will be a full week (which we're calling browsing week) when all of the auction offerings are posted but before the auction has begun (and we encourage every creator to take a look at their offerings post at the beginning of browsing week. And if you discover any errors or misrepresentations at that point, let us know and we can fix them.
So who are you guys, anyhow?

Date: 2018-12-30 04:30 pm (UTC)Is it possible to offer additional fandoms in an untagged way? (Such that it doesn't change management.) Especially for small fandoms that are hit or miss, I'd like to be able to offer those without making the entire offer less likely to be picked up. ^.^

Date: 2019-01-06 09:33 pm (UTC)Our reasons for limiting the number of fandoms are two; the first is (as you've guessed) that the tagging becomes incredibly unwieldy; the second is that we had a couple of creators who bailed on their auctions the first year, because they had offered a large number of fandoms and ended up not being that interested in creating for the one their top bidder had chosen. So that's why we're asking that the extra untagged fandoms be ones for which you've already created -- it helps address the second concern as well as the first.
But yes, this seems like a good way to get those tiny Yuletide fandoms in there. If you're willing to do the promotion to make sure other people know those extra teeny-tiny fandoms are on offer, we're happy for you to do it!

Date: 2019-01-06 11:22 pm (UTC)Thing is, these are by the same author, but not all fans of SSSS are familiar with A Redtail's Dream, and the stories are completely unrelated to each other. (It'd be like if you listed Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Coraline together.) This probably won't cause any problems, but it might confuse some people.
I don't know if it's too late to separate them, but I figured I'd let you know anyway.

If you're reading this response and you haven't yet signed up, and you also want to use duplicate language in your signups, please plan ahead! Write that text in a word file or a sticky note and paste it in so that you have a copy of your own. it will be much faster for you, and much easier for everyone, if you do it this way.

Date: 2019-01-12 02:54 am (UTC)Also, are there word caps? Minimums? I'm a little bit of a niche writer - what if no one bids on my particular slot? :x Thank you....

Date: 2019-01-12 07:14 pm (UTC)As for your last question, about bidding... we can't guarantee that every single participant will be bid on. In the past two years, the vast majority of our creators have received bids, but there have been a handful that didn't. This usually seemed to happen because the creator had laid out a very narrow range of things they were willing to create (as a made-up example: "I only write Kirk/Uhura, no background ships or past relationship drama. I will write EITHER soft H/C OR soft BDSM with happy ending and no consent issues.")
That being said: It's totally okay to be niche! The issue with signups like the one above, we suspect, is that they don't seem to leave much room for the bidder's ideas or wishes. So it's a good idea to make clear, in your signup, the range of things you are open to writing. We also encourage you to promote your own auction directly to friends and followers. If the people who already like your stuff know you're offering something, you're more likely to get bids!
