Our very first one, hooray!
A writer from the Sherlock fandom says:
“The only reason I finished my first longfic was because of my beta reader. She signed on when I was about four chapters in, and just telling her my plans for the rest of the story made it so much easier to continue. She asked great questions that helped me discover new things about the story and the characters. When my seventh chapter just wasn’t coming together, she gave me incredible helpful advice about the flow of the scenes — and, what’s more, reminded me of a key dimension of the central character’s personality, which hadn’t been important to the story before but ended up tying it all together, and even pushing me toward a better ending than the one I’d planned. For those last few difficult chapters, I had someone who knew the story (and my hopes and plans for it) almost as well as I did, but who could also see it with a clarity that I myself couldn’t manage.
As proud as I am of that story, I know I couldn’t have done it without her. It’s been five years since I finished, but I’m grateful and I always will be.”
